Be an Informed Consumer

It's always important to spend money wisely, but it's even more important when money is tight. As consumers we're faced with buying decisions on a daily basis. We buy everything from yogurt to real estate to financial products. Some purchases involve little money and little importance. Others represent a significant expenditure and can tie us to the company making the product or service for many years to come. If we had unlimited time, we would do our homework on more of our purchases and make better decisions. Here are a few tools to help make your research easier.

Consumer Reports

Consumers Union tests all kinds of products, from cookies to washing machines, from banking services to paint. They publish a monthly magazine and a website. If you subscribe to the magazine, you get access to their information online. I recommend getting the magazine and perusing it each month. This is great for the low ticket items.  You would never research this kind of item before making a decision, but when you go to the grocery store, you might remember what peanut butter got high marks from Consumer Reports. The website is ideal when it's time to research a major purchase decision. If you need a new refrigerator or credit card, you can find the latest information, even if it was published before your subscription began.

JD Power & Associates

This is a marketing firm that collects consumer feedback on a variety of high ticket items, from cars to cell phone service. It's important to note that their information comes from large numbers of consumers who have used these products and services. Their staff doesn't actually test products like Consumer Reports does. JD Power and Associates is so highly regarded that when they give a product their quality award, sales of that product often rise noticeably.

Better Business Bureau

The BBB has been around for many years. Now they have a website and you can get the information you want about a business or charity from your computer. Remember that they don't test products or solicit feedback. They simply facilitate consumer comments. They rarely make a judgment about whether a complaint has merit. Instead they forward the complaint to the company involved and give them the opportunity to address it. Remember that since the consumers who participate are self-selected, they're likely to be complaints rather than complements. And remember also that every company will have some unhappy customers. One of the marks of a truly customer-service oriented company is that they address and resolve their customers' complaints.

In this internet age where information can be shared at almost no cost, research is easier than it's ever been. You still need to take the available information and apply it to your own needs to come up with the wisest choices. It takes some time, but it's worth it. Especially for major decisions.

There are a lot of anti aging face products, lotions, treatments and more that are supposed to reverse the effects of aging in the face and regenerate the skin tissue. The problem nowadays is that there is a lot of misinformation and confusion on what really works and what not.

consumer reports subscription

A good place to start your research is on consumer reports, you will be able to read other peoples reviews, opinions and experiences of different facial products. Some professional consumer reports can actually cost a lot of money, but you can also find some useful information free on the internet.

Consumer Reports

You can do a simple search on Google for "brand name" review and you will read the different opinions from other consumers. You can also search for skin care forums and search for posts that talk about product reviews.

There are a few things that you should always look for in an anti aging product:

A good anti aging product should have in its label all the ingredients it uses.

You should check out that the ingredients of the product are natural or organic and that they do not contain harsh chemicals.

There are some synthetic ingredients that you should avoid in any anti aging product like: Acylamide, Alcohols, Fragrances, Mineral oil, Parabens and Padimate-o.

Avoid products with collagen, because collagen on it self can not penetrate the layers of the skin. On the other hand what you should do is buy a product with ingredients that will stimulate the growth of collagen in your skin.

One of the most important recommendations i can give you is that any facial product that you buy should be made of 100% natural ingredients. In the US there is no regulation or restrictions on what chemicals skin care products can use, so be aware.

Your Environmental Health

Many symptoms that can not be diagnosed by X-rays, ultrasounds and blood work may be caused by a chemical sensitivity.

#1 Tap water

CONSUMER REPORTS WATER SOFTENERS

Tap water contains fluoride, chlorine and arsenic that is making many people sick. For decades, the Environmental Protection Agency set an acceptable arsenic level of 50 parts per billion in drinking water. But recent studies suggested that this level was too high and increased the risk of bladder and lung cancer. Some 13 million people in the United States routinely drink water with a high amount of arsenic. Most of them are in small towns and rural areas but some in cities as large as Albuquerque. Independent studies found many bottle waters have varying degrees of contamination.

Chlorination of municipal water supplies dramatically reduced the death rate from typhoid fever, a bacterial infection which is spread through drinking water. But chlorine reacts with organic matter dissolved in water to form cancer-promoting organochlorines like the trihalomethanes (THMs), of which the best known is chloroform. Drinking chlorinated water increases the risk of developing cancer of the rectum or the bladder, the risk increasing the more tap water is drunk.

Fluoride allergy can cause high cholesterol, bone tumors, chronic osteomyelitis, chronic polyarthritis, and rheumatoid disease. Tap water may have very serious consequences for children in the long term. Recent reports from the CDC, indicates the drugs and medications are included in our public water supply, nationwide.

There are many classes of pesticides, but perhaps the 3 major classes are carbamates, organophosphates and organochlorines. Pesticide are very toxic to humans. The agriculture industry uses 90% of the pesticides in this country, but pesticides can be found in plants, carpets, paper, dentures and contact lenses. Because of the routine spraying of buildings and crops, we can be exposed to pesticides anywhere we go.

#4 Plastic containers

Half of the total production of phenol is used in the manufacture of plastics. Common exposures include phenol emissions from computers, televisions, plastics, cleaning products and newsprint. Serious effects include gangrene, circulatory collapse, respiratory failure, paralysis, convulsions and death.

#5 Ethanol

Ethanol is one of many different alcohols and is the alcohol in liquor. It is clear, colorless, and has a pleasant odor with a burning taste. Ethanol may be synthetic, such as that used in industry, or it may be "organic," made by fermenting grains, sugars, fruit juices and potatoes. Ethanol is rapidly absorbed through the intestines which has the capacity to multiply the severity of an allergic reaction. It is formed naturally in the intestinal tract from the fermentation of sugar, alcohol, and simple carbohydrates, and can be formed in excess in the lower bowel by the action of Candida albicans. Central nervous system depression, feelings of exhilaration and talkativeness, impaired motor coordination, dizziness, flushing, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, headache, wheezing, vision problems, impaired perception, stupor and death can be all be caused by ethanol. Ethanol is often used as a preservative.

#6 Building chemicals

All forms of formaldehyde cause many symptoms include eye, nose, and respiratory tract irritation, asthma, contact dermatitis, nausea, chronic headache, and memory lapses.

Unfortunately, formaldehyde makes colors brighter and surfaces smoother and manufacturers use it to produce attractive consumer goods, making many new products a formaldehyde exposure. When it combines with other chemicals it forms a resin, making it very important industrially. Among its many uses are setting dyes; waterproofing fabrics; tanning and preserving hides; manufacturing building materials; and in manufacturing of artificial silks, cellulose esters. dyes organic chemicals and glass mirrors. It is also used as a germicide, disinfectant and fungicide. It is a major, continuous indoor pollutant. Neutralizing a formaldehyde allergy is the secret to eliminating sick building syndrome.

How to Choose a Washing Machine

Looking for a new washing machine? It is always a good idea to do some research before one puts down the money for an appliance. Since a washing machine is an expensive piece of equipment one should be able to get many years of service from it. Compare prices on the internet, visit department stores and brand appliance stores before making your purchase. Look for a washing machine that has basically simple mechanisms that can be operated easily without having to refer to the user's manual each time. You need the ideal washing machine that gets your clothes clean, fresh and almost dry. The wash and spin cycle should be fast and as silent as possible. Make a sensible investment that gives you value for money.

First you need to decide whether you wish to go in for a front loading or top loading machine. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. You can certainly use less water and less electricity with a front-loading ones. As this type of machine does not use an agitator it is gentler on clothes. Usually front-loaders are quieter than top loading machines. However these machines require you to use a special low-suds detergent. When shopping around you will find that Frigidaire is somewhat cheaper than other front-loading ones in its class. Toploading washing machines need less space as the door does not need to swing open.

CONSUMER REPORTS WATER SOFTENERS

As for capacity, you need to figure how large your load is. Make sure to weigh your average load before buying the machine. Typically front-loading ones hold about 8 pounds of clothes. Measure the area where it will be placed and how close the water inlet is. Even an inch or two extra can make a huge difference

Check out consumer-oriented magazines or the internet for reviews of different brands. Look for one which has user friendly controls, such as the conveniently placed touch-pads. Similarly the lint trap should be easily accessible and easy to clean.

On the inside of opt for a drum made of stainless steel or plastic as it won t scratch, chip or rust. The ones that have bleach and fabric softener-dispensers make washing a load much easier for you. Some machines even have a hand-wash cycle.

Some companies make the ones which carry an Energy Star or "Green" certification. Look for a machine in which the rear legs can be adjusted and will prevent it from vibrating too much or rocking side to side.

Next, check on the spin cycle. The one like Frigidaire extracts the maximum amount of water and delivers clothes that need a very short time to dry. Some machines also allow you to pop in a garment without turning off the electricity and shutting off the water.

Look for one with many setting options. Different fabrics need to be washed for different lengths of time and at different temperatures.

Lastly be sure to get a good warranty and one that is stamped and dated by the dealer.
